The State of Breed Specific Legislation in Vermont
Vermont is known as a peaceful, loving & accepting state...but does it apply to pit bull type dogs? Below is a outline of Vermont's recent history of breed specific legislation:
July 18, 1988- Montgomery ordinance banning pit bull type dogs, which is still effective today.
2014- Rep. Dave Potter sponsored a bill (H.755) that would prohibit municipalities from creating breed specific bans. However, per our conversation with Rep. Potter in October 2015, the bill is one of many to be reviewed by the Committee on Government Operations. With so many issues to address, it is unlikely it will move out of committee.
February 6, 2014- Higate repeals the ordinance banning pitbulls, which had been in effect since 1981
June 8, 2015- St. Albans Town repeals the ordinance banning pit bulls.

There is only one town in Vermont with active breed specific legislation: Montgomery, Vermont. As of 2014, the population of Montgomery was less than 2,000 people.
So while one town still embraces BSL, it seems that, in general, Vermonters love their pit bulls! (click photo for facebook responses to the BFP headline!) |
